The party returns to the road leading west of the city of Verbosh, The ant tracks head north-northwest of here. It is about 9 pm on Midsummer Eve, the sun has just gone down.
Jacob sends two bird messengers to the city, one to the Lonely Hobbit Inn to inform the other followers of Beytnorn that he and his friends have found and destroyed the ants that left the tracks. The other to tell Cariel the same news.
Cariel is mingling and enjoying the party atmosphere. After the bird comes to her she informs her congregation that she must defend the city, her horse appears and she rides off, to much cheering and acclaim. She informs he city guard of her mission on the way out of the gate.
Jacob leads his companions past one barn that the creatures tried and failed to enter, to another farm about two hours distant, mostly to the northwest. The second barn was breached and raided, several animals have been killed and drug away, the others have fled.
It is now about 11 o’clock at night and Jacob can tell that the attack happened about six to eight hours before they arrived. The moon is almost full and the sky is clear. They follow the trail about two more hours and find a mound on the plain, about 50 feet wide and high. They can see it clearly from about 100 yards away. Several yards from the western side of the mound there are two pony-sized ants milling sluggishly around an opening in the ground. Another ant crawls into an opening at the top.
The companions consider what course of action to take, it is about 2 am.
Cariel suggests they divert a stream , Jacob doesn’t see how they could carry out this plan and doesn’t bother looking for a stream. Cariel tries, but doesn’t find one.
Raven is still covered in ant goo, he considers entering the nest and setting a fire with alcohol to burn or smoke them out. His friends tell him this is too risky, if he injures an ant they may turn on him. He then suggests they return to town and find a mage who could summon fire or a water elemental.
Jacob takes some of the goo from Raven and smears it on himself, he scouts around the mound to get more information. He gets closer (about 30 yards away), but the ants do not notice him. He realizes that the ants guarding the openings have smaller jaws and are probably worker ants, not scouts or soldiers. He finds a total of four nest openings, not counting the one on top, with two ants at each point. They are looking at the western opening, there are two more on the north side and one more on the eastern side.
They decide to go back to town and look for a mage.
It has been decided we head back into town to find a magic user. They must have the affinities that will be useful to our plan. I am hoping to find a wielder that can conjure up an elemental. I’m really hoping for a water one.
